Fairtrade tastes good!

February 10th 2015

By the end of 2015, the majority of our chocolate dairy products will contain certified cocoa. To find out more, we interviewed Quality Manager Jean-Charles Gander.

Mr Gander, what does ELSA’s commitment involve?
ELSA has decided to use UTZ Certified and Max Havelaar Fairtrade cocoa to produce almost all of its dairy products and chocolate yoghurts.

What do these labels mean?
They guarantee that the cocoa has been produced in a way which respects both the environment and the cocoa producers. It ensures that the producers receive a higher wage and offers them training programmes, which helps produce high-quality cocoa in the long term.

Do we know where the cocoa comes from?
Yes. UTZ Certified and Max Havelaar Fairtrade cocoa comes from South America, Africa and Indonesia.

Why did you choose a certified cocoa?
Because sustainable development is now part of our DNA and this choice confirms our commitment to our customers and our partners. It also enables us to meet M-Industry objectives.

Which products will be affected?
All our ranges except M-Budget products.

Finally, when will these changes take place?
By the end of 2020, all the cocoa purchased by ELSA will be UTZ Certified or Max Havelaar Fairtrade. However, most of our products will bear these labels from as early as 2015.
